Animal Specialty Hospital of Florida provides emergency surgical care and advanced general surgical procedures for dogs and cats. General surgery refers to the surgical treatment of soft tissue diseases and illness and our board certified surgeons work closely with your primary care veterinarian and you to offer the most advanced surgical options that are also best suited to your pet. The general surgery service at Animal Specialty Hospital of Florida is the only one of its kind in Southwest Florida that has the ability to use in- house advanced imaging, such as MRI and CT, to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of soft tissue conditions. We use minimally–invasive techniques including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy whenever possible to maximize your dog or cat’s comfort and speedy recovery.

General Surgical Services

  • Abdominal and Gastrointestinal Surgery including foreign body obstruction, gastric dilatation and volvulous (bloat), laparoscopic prophylactic gastropexy, interstinal tumor removal, spleen removal, hernias, trauma and infections as well as laparoscopic biopsy.
  • Cardiovascular Surgery such as pericardial window and patent ductus arteriosus ligation.
  • Oncologic Surgery including major mass removal and reconstructive surgery.  The use of MRI and CT is the superior method for staging most invasive tumors.
  • Respiratory and Pulmonary Surgery such as treatment for brachycephalic airway obstruction, laryngeal paralysis, thoracic wall trauma, infections in the chest (pyothorax), and lung tumors.
  • Urologic Surgery such as laparoscopic assisted cystotomy for bladder stone removal, kidney biopsy, and urethrostomies for urethral obstruction.
  • Skin and Reconstructive Surgery including treatment of chronic ear problems with total ear canal ablation/ bullae osteotomy.
